From 2027, the Society will manage membership in-house.
Instead of renewing with Oxford University Press, as in previous years, you will renew directly with the Society via our new membership and payment platform.
The new system will be ready for 2 November. So please keep an eye out for further updates via email and the Gazette in the coming weeks!
We have been exploring a transfer of membership management for some time and are excited by the possibility of having a more direct, personal relationship with members. The change will give the Society control over pricing, membership categories, and membership data. We will also be able to respond directly to queries and potential membership issues, rather than triangulating with OUP. Above all, for subscriptions and renewals, we hope this will remove the challenges that have arisen from a third party handling membership administration.
We understand, of course, that membership transition may raise some concerns. However, please rest assured that our priorities are:
Making renewals as straightforward as possible.
- You will receive your traditional renewal email in November, containing
- our renewal letter and email link to renew your membership with us.
- From there, you will be taken directly to our new membership platform (Membermojo) to complete a short form and collect payment (via Stripe)
Protecting your data.
- OUP will share your data only with our Exec, to upload to our secure database.
- Membermojo has been chosen for this purpose because its servers are based in the UK, are GDPR compliant, and guarantee your data will not be shared with any third party or used in advertising.
Providing personal, detailed support throughout the transition.
- The Society will share guidance on the renewal and subscription process via email, the Gazette, and the SSHM website in October and November.
- Our Membership Secretary and Executive Secretary will be available to answer any questions (email admin@sshm.org)
However, one consequence of this process is that OUP are no longer offering personal subscriptions to the Society via their website as they update their systems. If you urgently require a membership during this transitional period to apply for conference funding or a bursary, please contact admin@sshm.org so we can assist you in purchasing a membership (please note any membership purchased during this transitional period will be at 2027 rates and will cover membership up to 31 December 2027).
