The Society for the Social History of Medicine awards financial assistance for conferences and workshops on the history of medicine.  Applicants should note that grants are not retrospectively awarded, the usual amount granted for a one day event is £500 although in exceptional instances, we will release funds up to the value of £1500, subject to the Society’s available funds. Applications should be submitted by a conference organizer, who must also be a member of SSHM at the time of application. Applicants must demonstrate: relevance to the history of medicine, broadly defined, and an economical budget. Criteria against which all applications will be ranked includes: (1) extent of involvement of early career scholars; (2) using a competitive budget; (3) originality of theme; (4) significance/impact and inclusivity. Priority will be given to applicants who show that they have sought a range of available funding.

Applications are reviewed after three annual deadlines: 1 October, 1 March, and 1 June. Applicants are requested to ensure that the date of the conference/workshop for which the application is being made is at least three months after the respective deadline to allow the SSHM Executive Committee time to review applications.

Successful applicants must agree to: prominently display SSHM’s logo on conference or workshop material; have the event advertised through SSHM channels; provide a report on the event after its completion, to be published in the SSHM Gazette; and advertise student and early-career SSHM bursaries for attendees who are SSHM members.
